Are you an expecting first time working mother preparing for the birth of your baby?
This is such an exciting time. Enjoy the season! It will all be a memory soon. Enjoy!
When everyone tells you it goes fast, they’re not entirely truthful. It goes by really really fast!
My first born will be eight years old in a few weeks. Yesterday, as she tried on one of my shoes, she happily pointed out that she will be able to wear my shoes pretty soon! My heart! Because it’s true!
Becoming a Working Career Mom
I tried and waited to get pregnant for almost two years until finally… I started planning for my baby even before she was conceived. When the time came for her delivery I had so many “plans” and was equipped with multiple copies of my birth plan to ensure everyone knew my “dos and don’ts” for her delivery.
However, not much happened according to my “plan”.
After 26 hours of trying to deliver my baby, I surrendered and ended up having a c-section.
My memory of those 26 hours and those after delivery are a blur. It was hard to focus on much after spending so many hours laboring. Plus dealing with all the side effects from the medications I was given along with the c-section.
I was totally out of it after the delivery of my baby. So much so that for almost one year I thought my daughter was born on a Saturday when in fact she was born on a Sunday!
I was shocked that I hadn’t remembered the day of the week my first born child was born!

The Must-Dos For Working Moms After Giving Birth
-
Inform Your Company’s HR Department That You Have Delivered Your Baby To Activate Your Maternity Leave.
You may need to let them know the type of delivery you had as well.
The entire maternity leave calculation was complicated and confusing for me. I shared the highlights from my research on figuring our Maternity Leave, FMLA and Short-Term Disability in this article.
-
Contact Your Insurance Company.
Depending on how your company handles short-term disability (how you get paid, while on maternity leave) you may need to inform your insurance company that your baby was born.
- Start The Process For Your Baby’s Insurance.
You typically have some grace period to have this completed. My husband and I chose to add our daughter’s to his insurance. Review your options prior as apart of your planning and preparation. -
Scheduled Your Baby’s First Post Hospital Peditrican Visit.
It’s recommended that your baby sees their pediatrician the first week for their first “official visit”. This article reviews what it covered in the first doctor’s visit.
-
Make Your Postpartum Doctor’s Appointment.
The recommendation of when or how soon to see your doctor after delivery varies depending on each woman’s medical history. It’s typically in the first three to six weeks. This article covers what to expect during your first postpartum appointment.
-
Apply for Your Baby’s Social Security Number And Birth Certificate.
Your hospital typically has someone come to your room and assists you with submitting these applications/forms. I strongly recommend taking advantage of this help and get it taken care of while you’re in the hospital.
- Sign Up And Take The Free Lactation Class If Offered.
Breastfeeding is no joke! This could make the difference where you’re able to breastfeed your baby. I had a midwife/doula who was a certified lactation specialist with my first baby. And it was still challenging to figure it all out. I took a free class (I think it was free) with my second in the hospital. It was very very helpful to have someone right there helping me. This helped me pump and store my milk in preparation to returned to work. -
Secure Your Daycare Spot.
Call and confirm your childcare arrangement for when you return to work.
-
Schedule Your First Born Photoshoot.
