Do you need a job? But, you’re thinking to wait until after the holidays to start your job search? Here are five reasons why working moms should job search during the holidays.
Working Moms Should Job Search During The Holidays
I know job searching during the holidays, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas time may seem counterintuitive. Holidays have always been very important to me especially after becoming a mom. My daughters look forward to seeing their cousins and the rest of our family during the holidays. This is the only time of year that we see some of our family members.
I understand that you may be thinking the holidays are not a good time to do or even think about looking for a job.
According to an article on the employment website, Monster.com It takes an average of 5 months to secure a new job. Don’t wait until the New Year to start your job search. Start now and get ahead in your job search process.
Five Reasons Working Moms Should Job Search During The Holidays
1. Because you need a job.
Why are you looking for a job? Are you looking for seasonal work to make extra cash to help with your holiday expenses? Do you need to make a career change or are you returning to the employment force?
You need to work, so why wait? Start your job search now!
Think about why you need a job. Why wait until next year when you can start now. Remember the average successful job hunt spans five months.
2. The job market will be less competitive.
Most people stop their job search during the holidays. It’s basic supply and demand. There will be fewer candidates for you to compete with. And an increasing need for employers to find qualified candidates.
Take advantage of this less competitive time in the job market and start your job search today.
3. Great networking opportunities during the holidays.
Networking is one of the most effective ways to secure a job. The holidays offer several opportunities for you to connect with your network and let them know you’re in the job market.
As you attend holiday events tell the people you know and who knows you about what you have to offer. Networking is most effective when you tell others what you have to offer instead of what you’re seeking.
Even if the person you’re speaking with isn’t the decision-maker they can relay your value to people in their network… Thereby becoming a valuable marketing advocate for you. People are more willing to assist you with your job search if you tell them about your experience, skills, education, and accomplishments.
4. Seasonal holiday jobs can lead to permanent jobs.
Many employers hire seasonal or temporary employees when business picks up during the holidays. These seasonal jobs can lead to permanent employment. You can check job boards such as Indeed.com for seasonal jobs.
5. Employers are hiring during the holidays.
Some companies close or slow down during the holidays, however, they continue with their hiring process. Employers could be looking to make their final hires for the year and some may be getting a head start for the new year.
If you need a job and employers are hiring you should take advantage of these opportunities. You will either secure employment before the year ends or early in the new year.
Remember Your “Why”
The holidays can bring a wide range of emotions. When you add the stress of needing a job it can be a lot. Think about “why” you need a job. Write the reasons down if you need to.
Also, check-in with yourself and see how you’re doing. Remember taking the first step in your job search may be all you can do and that will be okay. Take one step at a time, mama.
Recently, I was reminded of how challenging and fragile life can be especially when someone is not financially secure. I’m working with a mom that wanted to stay home with her young child for the first few years, however, her family fell on very difficult times.
She had been searching for a job for several months with no success. My client was able to secure full-time employment and started her new job this week! Yes, you can job search and secure a job during the holidays! She gave herself an early Christman gift.
Start your job search now. You will be a step closer to securing the job you need.
Finish the year strong, mama! Don’t wait for January 1st to start what you can start now.
